There’s a 100% chance of snow around noon here in Michigan. We’ll be getting 5" to 8" of snow. So...tough decision...do I travel an hour to work just to be snowed in and travel back on bad roads at 5? Or do I just lie and tell my manager that it’ll be unsafe to drive, despite the fact that the roads aren’t even bad yet?
I hate lying, or stretching the truth, so the latter option is squeamish to me. I’d like to follow the rules and be in the office, but I have to look out for my own safety. Work wants me in the office, but I can also clearly work out of my own home, work just doesn’t want me to because it’s the rules. And they got more strict as of late too.
Also, I leave for work at 7 and arrive at 8. Work doesn’t send out a “work from home, bad weather conditions” message until 8:30. So....I’m not really sure what to do. I know I can traverse the snow, but I won’t be on the roads alone and frankly, I don’t trust other drivers.
I know I’m overthinking this, but I’m trying to be a good employee here, and I’m not sure what to do.... Ergh, sometimes I wish I can shut off the honesty part of my brain...
Update: weather.com just gave an advisory for bad road conditions. I’ll work from home. Hopefully work won’t get upset...
Update #2: work sent out a email saying “use your own judgement in commuting. My judgement is that it’s unsafe. They sent it out at midnight, I’m proud of them actually.

Show up for work and keep an eye on the radar. When it starts to snow, or it's obvious it is going to tell them you're leaving early to make sure you can get home safely. Or tell them you're staying home because the weather is predicted to be bad and you don't want to risk the commute home becoming unsafe.

If it told my boss I wasn’t coming in for anything less than two feet, he’d laugh at me.
It was actually one of the questions during the interview: are you comfortable driving in inclement weather?

The honest part of your brain is saying you’re concerned about the forecast, and that is absolutely valid. I’d say call in and work from home, it’s not worth the worry.

A warning was just released for me area, we're getting hit with a snow storm. I'm staying home.

I have no issue driving, but my concern is in the hour commute with other drivers on the road. Plus the return commute, which will have backed up traffic for miles, and there’s only two routes home.
This is the first time I've been worried about the weather here.

I'm working from home, we have a county wife weather advisory.

I’m going in but I only live 2 miles from work. I am banking on them letting us bail early too.

I’m going for it today I’ve got winter tires on my Corolla, a college mid term and a doctors appointment.

I’m more worried about tomorrow. You down river? Heard its freezing ice down there. Glad to see some honesty in this world. My co workers will call in for a hang nail.

Yeah I'm 39 miles, and I already know where the traffic bottlenecks will happen. But it's not really possible to avoid them, :/

I just have the Secretary of State to visit, well...suppose to...we’ll see.

Thanks. I'm still iffy on not going to work, and there's no snow currently, but my major concern is the return trip. That looks like it'll be a hassle to get through.

I hear ya. I hope their overblowing it. If not should be fun the next few days. Weather man in michigan has to be the best job ever.
Oops wrong again folks! We’ll doit again tomorrow. Back to traffic.

I'm not saying you should I'm just saying I am. Safety should come first but I can't just take a zero on a midterm.

I hope so too. Also, either I’m getting hit with hail right now, or we have a mammal in the attic that all of a sudden wanted to make as much noise as possible....

Yeah, I’d probably stay home if I had that long of a commute too. Especially if you can still do your work from home. (Side rant: I hate it when employers don’t support teleworking. Makes no sense if your job just involves sitting at a computer anyway, why does it matter where the computer is? Grrrrrrrrr)

For us, it’s to tell potential clients “all our employees work out of this secure office”, but it’s just our division’s rules. I’m on loan to another division within the company, who are allowed to work from home all the time. So...who knows?

Security is a valid concern, sure. But there are ways to create a secure remote connection. I think it’s mostly down to stuck-in-the-past micromanagers who can’t wrap their heads around the concept that their employees have lives outside of work.

When I lived in NC, and we got our one snow a year and the whole state basically shut down, I was working overnights at a grocery store. I was in college as well, but I had an old 2nd gen 4Runner and my commute looked like the above photo. I loved every minute of it.

Well, it started here...

Dude....its MI. We’ll get an inch when they say 7"s. You should know this by now!
Plus, its gonna turn to rain this afternoon. Tomorrow morning should be interesting though.

That’s a big inch, considering there wasn't any snow this morning, :).

Wow, I’m impressed. Guess I haven’t looked out the window from my cube in awhile......
I’m still waiting for it to turn to rain this afternoon and just melt everything before freezing tonight. Tomorrow morning is gonna suck....
